United Kingdom Parliament By-Election – 18 June 2026

A United Kingdom Parliamentary by-election will take place on Thursday 18 June 2026 for the Arbroath & Broughty Ferry constituency.

This is a cross-boundary constituency containing electors living in Arbroath, Carnoustie, Kellas, Letham, Monifieth and Monikie and surrounding areas in Angus, and those living in Broughty Ferry, Douglas, Fintry, Mill of Mains and Whitfield areas of Dundee City Council.

Anyone who wants to vote in this by-election must make sure they are registered in time. If you receive a poll card from the Returning Officer, this confirms that you are registered to vote at your current address.

The deadline to register to vote for this election is Monday 1 June 2026

Who is eligible to vote in this election?

You can vote in this by-election on Thursday 18 June 2026 if you are registered to vote and are:

  • Resident within the electoral area
  • Aged 18 or over on Thursday 18 June 2026
  • A qualifying British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen
  • British citizens registered as Overseas electors with a previous connection to the area?

The following people cannot vote in this UK Parliament By-election:

  • Electors aged under 18 years old on Thursday 18 June 2026
  • A qualifying foreign citizen (who is not a Commonwealth citizen) who has permission to stay in the United Kingdom, or who does not need such permission
  • A Member of the House of Lords
  • A convicted prisoner normally resident in Scotland and serving a combined sentence of 12 months or less anywhere in the UK
  • Convicted persons detained for a period of more than 12 months in pursuance of their sentences, excluding contempt of court (though remand prisoners and non-convicted prisoners and civil prisoners can vote if they are on the electoral register)
  • Anyone found guilty within the previous five years of corrupt or illegal practices in connection with an election

Polling Information Letters

  • Polling Information letters will be sent on or around Wednesday 27 May 2026 to all electors who are currently registered as electors.
  • Anyone who registers between Thursday 14 May 2026 and Monday 1 June 2026 will receive a Polling Information letter from the Electoral Registration Officer on or around 6 June 2026

Voters will need to show Voter ID when voting at the polling station at this UK Parliamentary by-election.

If you arrive at a polling place without an accepted form of photo ID, you will be asked to return with ID that is accepted.

If you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate to vote at a polling station.

You do not need photo ID to vote by post.

  • Half Fare SmartPass issued in Northern Ireland
  • Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card), for example a Young Scot card

Anonymous Electors who reside in this constituency and who plan vote in person will be supplied with a new Anonymous Elector’s Document application to complete so they may vote at their designated polling station.

If after 5pm Tuesday 9 June 2026 you or your appointed proxy no longer are able to use photo ID that was intended to be used at the polling station then you should contact the Electoral Registration Officer to complete an Emergency Proxy application form. Voter Authority Certificate

If you do not have an accepted form of photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

The deadline to apply is:

5pm on Tuesday 9 June 2026

You will need to be registered to vote before applying.

Applications can be made online https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate

or by contacting the Electoral Registration Officer for a paper application form.

When applying for a Voter Authority Certificate, you will need to provide your

  • name
  • address
  • date of birth
  • National Insurance number
  • You should apply using the same name that you used to register to vote.

You can still apply if you don’t know your National Insurance number, or don’t have one.

You will need to provide other forms of proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, bank statement and a utility bill and a member of the ERO team will contact you to arrange this.

If you don’t have any other accepted proof of identity, you can ask someone you know to confirm your identity. This is known as an attestation.

You will not need to provide your gender, and your certificate will not have a gender marker.

You will need to submit a photo with your application. The requirements for the photo are similar to the requirements for a passport photo.

Applications made around the deadline may result in the applicant collecting the certificate in person from the Electoral Registration Officer to avoid postal delays.  Voter Authority Certificates may be collected from the Electoral Registration Officer until 10pm on Thursday 18 June 2026.

Postal Voting

The deadline to apply for a postal vote is:

5 pm on Tuesday 2 June 2026

You cannot apply for a new postal vote or cancel or amend a postal vote after this deadline.

To ensure ballot papers reach voters in time, they will be issued as follows;

You are encouraged to apply for a postal vote as early as possible, particularly if you expect to be away on polling day. You can apply online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote or contact the Electoral Registration Officer to send you an application form.

Please note the postal ballot paper issue dates to ensure your ballot will reach you before you depart. If this is unlikely, you may wish to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf.

Proxy Voting

Electors may appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf if they cannot attend their polling station.

You can apply to appoint a proxy for the following reasons:

  • blindness
  • other disability (the disability must be specified)
  • occupation/employment/service/attendance on a course (details must be provided)
  • registered as a service voter or overseas voter
  • registered as an anonymous elector
  • journey necessary by sea or air to get from the registered address to their polling station

Eligibility to act as a proxy

Your appointed proxy must:

  • Be 18 or over on polling day (Thursday 18 June 2026)
  • Be registered to vote
  • Be eligible to vote in the election
  • Be able to get to your polling station on polling day

Your proxy does not have to be related to you.

Deadline to appoint a proxy is 5pm on Tuesday 9 June 2026

At UK Parliamentary elections, a person can act as a proxy for up to two electors based in the UK. Where acting for overseas electors, a proxy may act for up to four people, of whom no more than two may be based in the UK.

What your appointed proxy needs to do on polling day

Your proxy must attend your polling station to vote on your behalf. They will receive a proxy poll card with details of where and when to vote.

At UK Parliamentary elections, your proxy must show their own photo ID when voting at the polling station.

Proxy Voting – Voting by post

If your proxy cannot visit the polling station, they may apply to vote by post on your behalf.

The deadline for postal proxy applications is 5pm on Tuesday 2 June 2026. Please note that his is earlier than the ordinary proxy deadline.

Cancelling your proxy

If you wish to cancel a proxy and vote in person, you must do so by 5pm on Tuesday 2 June 2026

Emergency Proxy

After 5pm on Tuesday 9 June 2026, you may still apply for an Emergency Proxy for any of the following reasons:

  • A medical condition, illness or disability arising after this deadline
  • An unexpected change in your occupation, service or employment that prevents you attending the polling station

Your photo ID is lost, stolen or damaged after the deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate or Anonymous Elector’s Document (Note: a postal proxy cannot be changed under this provision)

The deadline for an application is 5pm on Thursday 18 June 2026 (polling day)

Once an emergency proxy application is accepted, a confirmation will be issued to both you and your appointed proxy. This will include details of the polling station at which your proxy may vote.

Please note you can still vote in person if you have a proxy vote, but only if you do so before your proxy has voted for you.
