Annual Canvass

The Electoral Registration Officer must ensure that the electoral register is up to date and identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.

Anyone that wants to vote in elections must be registered.

The annual canvass is an opportunity for people to check whether they are registered and if they are asked to respond then they must do so.

As part of the annual canvass of electors, households across Angus and Perth & Kinross, which have provided the Electoral Registration Officer with an email address, will be contacted during early July 2025 to clarify whether the information we currently hold for the named electors in the property is still correct.

The email will provide full information on how to respond securely using the appropriate web address. There will be a web address allocated for Angus residents, and a separate web address allocated for Perth & Kinross residents.

The email is being sent in an effort to provide electors with an additional method of making their annual canvass return and also helps mitigate the postage costs incurred by each local authority area.

In August 2025, all other households across Angus and Perth & Kinross, for whom we do not hold an email address, will be sent a letter and/or a form asking residents to check whether the information that currently appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct.

This includes asking anyone living in the household to register if they are:
• A British citizen, an Irish citizen, or a qualifying foreign national.
In Scotland, to qualify as a foreign citizen, the individual must be resident in Scotland and either have leave to enter or remain in the UK, or not require such leave.
• Aged 14 or older (15 year olds and some 14 year olds are also entitled to be included on the register as ‘attainers’).

Eligible electors can vote in Scottish Parliamentary or local government elections from age 16, and can vote in UK Parliamentary elections from age 18.

If any of the elector details are incorrect, e.g. people moving in or out of the property, or if a householder wishes to change their voting method, the correct information can be supplied to the Electoral Registration Officer by either replying to the web address provided, or returning the completed form, in the pre-paid envelope, as appropriate.

The Electoral Registration Officer aims to publish the revised register of electors for both Angus and Perth & Kinross on 1 December 2025.

Any residents who have any questions can contact the Electoral Registration Office for Angus on 01307 499910, or for Perth & Kinross on 01738 630303.
