Electoral Commission
This public body was set up on 30 November 2000 under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. It is independant of the Government, not connected to any political organisation and answerable to Parliament. It has a unique role in the UK's constitution. The Commission aims to gain public confidence and encourage people to take part in the democratic process within the UK modernising the electoral process, promoting public awareness of electoral matters and regulating political parties.
